Surrounded by verdant rolling mountains, the ancient town lies on the banks of the Wuyang River. It was founded more than 2,000 years ago, when the emperor of the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) established a prefecture here. It occupies a strategically important location as the portal for entering Guizhou province.
The water town enjoys a balmy climate with no chilly winter nor hot summer. Ample rainfall makes local vegetation grow luxuriantly.
Zhenyuan is rich in tourist attractions, with abundant cultural relics and mesmerizing natural scenery. Historical residences, temples, shrines, docks, lanes, opera stages, and post roads are well-preserved. With over 20 ethnic groups including the Han, the Miao, and the Dong people cohabiting in the town, a diverse cross-ethnic culture has been nurtured.
