Emperor Yan (Yandi, also known as Shennong, or the Divine Husbandman), a tribal leader of Chinese mythology, is regarded as one of the nation's ancestors, and was the founder of Chinese farming civilization.

In his later years, Emperor Yan lived in the south of China. He died after mistakenly eating a poisonous herb, and was buried in today's Changsha city in Central China's Hunan province. The mausoleum is today maintained in his honor.

Located 19 kilometers to the west of Yanling county, Emperor Yan's Mausoleum is a state-level scenic spot, a national foremost protected cultural heritage site, a cross-Straits exchange base, a top farming culture tourist resort, and one of China's top ten classic tomb gardens. It was inscribed on China's natural and cultural heritage Tentative Lists in 2013.

The sacrificial ceremony at Emperor Yan's Mausoleum was among the first to merit national intangible cultural heritage status, and was rated as one of the world's ten most influential ancestral cultural events.

The natural and historical scenic spots, over 80 of various sizes, constitute the four main areas of the mausoleum: the mausoleum hall for making sacrifices to the ancestors, the Shennong Hall for public memorial ceremonies, the Shennong Garden, and the ecological preservation area of Huangshan mountain.

As the original site of Chinese agricultural civilization and with a history of more than 5,000 years, the Emperor Yan's Mausoleum has achieved the lofty historical and cultural status of "cultural holy land of the Chinese nation and spiritual home of global Chinese people", and is honored as "the first emperor's tomb of China" by people of Chinese origin.
