Permanent exhibitions of the National Maritime Museum of China
天津国家海洋博物馆基本陈列
From May 1, 2019
Location: National Maritime Museum of China, Tianjin
Based on the most updated academic results including maritime research and archaeological finds, the permanent exhibition of the National Maritime Museum of China is curated under the grand theme of "oceans and humanity". It consists of such themed displays as oceans in antiquity, oceans today, China's maritime civilization, oceans and astronomy, and polar exploration. The gallery of Oceans and Astronomy is the very first of its kind in any of China’s natural history museums.
From the ancient practice of celestial navigation to future interstellar exploration and China's achievement in polar expeditions the exhibition contemplates the interdependence and mutual symbiosis between the earth, the ocean, life, and humanity through careful selection and rational interpretation of specimens, fossils, and relics, discussing the sustainable development and transformation of the maritime environment.
The exhibition brings together 1,100 specimens of marine fossils from all over the world, more than 6,500 specimens of marine animals and plants, and over 400 relics of Chinese marine history, science, culture and art. They testify to the evolution of Chinese maritime civilization and Chinese people's wisdom.
