Hot springs
The coldest time of the year in Jilin province is from November to February, with outdoor temperatures dropping as low as -30 C. However, this is the best time to experience hot springs in the Changbai Mountain area.
The Changbai Mountains area, home to a cluster of dormant volcanoes, boasts many hot springs. The hot springs are said to be good for health because of their stable flow, constant temperature and quality water rich in minerals.
The most famous is Longxian Hot Spring which comprises hundreds of springs with an average temperature of above 60 C. In winter, trees around the hot springs are covered in rime, a special type of frost resembling granular tufts of ice.
For people who want to try something truly unique, Weidong Hot Spring is an option. The spring is particularly surprising because it can change from hot to cold suddenly and without warning.
After many years of development, hot springs have become a well-known and not-to-be-missed tourism product of Jilin province in winter. Currently, there are 26 hot spring-centered businesses in the Changbai Mountain area. In some hotels, shower water is taken directly from the natural hot springs.
