The Crowning Mountain (Jiming Shan) is located in the Xiahuayuan district of Zhangjiakou city. A 4A level scenic spot, it is 570 meters high and covers an area of 17.5 square kilometers. Besides the picturesque natural scenery, the mountain also has rich cultural resources, including temples and other man-made sites.
The history of temples and shrines in the mountain can be traced back to the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534). Boasting a harmonious religious culture of Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian origins, every year the temple fair in the fourth lunar month serves as a big attraction.
The Temple of Eternal Tranquility (Yongning Si), is the most renowned one among them with the largest scale. Established in the Liao Dynasty (916-1125), it went through several restorations and looks magnificent with bright colors.
Emperor Kangxi (r. 1661-1722) was believed to have visited the Crowing Mountain twice. The stone he rested on, which is called dragon lying stone, still remains intact.
