The Ministry of Justice is to run a project training village officials, according to a symposium of the national justice department and bureau chiefs held.

The symposium was held in Chengdu, Southwest China's Sichuan province, on July 20.

The project will emphasize training officials and people's mediators to promote the rule of law at grassroots level.

The General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and General Office of the State Council in June issued a joint statement on strengthening and improving rural governance.

The Ministry of Justice accordingly called on all localities to work on developing rural areas under the rule of law, provide legal services to poor households, and see to it that left-behind children, the elderly and women benefit from the rule of law, said ministry officials.

The ministry since this year has researched the promotion of the rule of law in rural areas, administrations of justice and county-level judicial administrations.

Organized by the ministry, the symposium gathered chiefs of municipal departments and bureaus of justice under central government, provinces and autonomous regions.

It called for increased reform of judicial administrations and a response to new demands of the people for the rule of law,.

It further called for the promotion of the rule of the country by law and high-quality legislation.
