Acupuncture and moxibustion constitute key components of traditional Chinese medicine. They involve needle insertion, cupping therapy, examination of the tongue and perhaps taking the pulse and other procedures.

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine in which thin needles are inserted into the body, and moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy which consists of burning dried moxa on particular points on the body.

The theories of acupuncture and moxibustion hold that the human body acts as a small universe connected by channels. Through stimulating different point of the channels the patient's self-regulating functions can be promoted.

Distinctive parts of Chinese culture, acupuncture and moxibustion are invaluable heritages based on Chinese traditional medicine and scientific tradition.

On December 16, 2010, acupuncture and moxibustion were listed as UNESCO intangible world heritages. They can also be applied in such specific areas as regulating endocrine and weight loss.
