Located in the Northwest Hubei province, Shennongjia Forestry District protects the largest primary forests remaining in Central China and provides habitat for many rare animal species.

It is made up of two components, Shennongding/Badong to the west and Laojunshan to the east.

In 2016, Hubei Shennongjia was listed as a World Heritage Site, the 50th World Heritage Site in China.

In 2021, the Wulipo Nature Reserve in Chongqing was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list at the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Fuzhou, east China's Fujian province. The nature reserve was included in the Hubei Shennongjia entry after the committee approved the a boundary modification proposal for the property.

The reserve borders Shennongjia forest in the east for about nine kilometers, situated in the same range of Daba Mountain as Shennongjia. This border region is home to many species. The addition of Wulipo complements the integrity of Shennongjia as a natural heritage site.
