Miaozihu Island in Putuo district, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, has witnessed significant changes over the past two decades.

The changes are largely due to the implementation of the "88 Strategy", a development plan proposed in 2003 aimed at taking advantage of natural resources to advance integrated urban-rural development.

The island has tapped into its natural resources to develop tourism, including holding fishing contests and introducing new business models, with more than 20 young people starting businesses on the island.

Yu Ding, born in Shenyang, Northeast China's Liaoning province, decided to start businesses on the island in 2019 because of her travel experience on the island.

The island has also channeled more resources into improving people's well-being, including installing facilities for tap water, LNG and domestic garbage.

Miaozihu Island is a microcosm of Zhoushan's efforts to become a modern maritime city. It has set up 450 15-minute cultural circles and rolled out 80 measures to improve the landscape of urban and rural areas.
