Recently, there was the splendid martial arts performance, the magnificent traditional lion dance, and the Tujia drum with national characteristics staged at Shangdongjie Township, a special venue of the first folk culture Tourism Festival in Sangzhi County.

Shangdongjie Township is a hometown of traditional martial arts with Yuejia Boxing which has been passed on for a thousand years. It is said to have been created by Yue Fei, a famous general who stood against the Jin invaders in the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279).

The average age of the performers in the martial arts group in Maluo Village is 60 years old. When they box, however, they are full of vigor and vitality, and when they play with swords, they are still bold and powerful.

The combination of Sun Wukong (the monkey in the Chinese classic novel “Journey to the West”) and lion dancing is vivid and eye-opening. The interaction between Sun Wukong and children has also caught the eye of tourists.

Shangdongjie Township, surrounded by mountains and waters, is rich in natural resources, including pure wild vine tea, mellow alpine honey, mineral water that won the national gold medal, and fully handmade silk quilts.

In recent years, the township government has been committed to the inheritance, protection, and promotion of traditional folk culture, and built a high-end drinking water brand Lishui Nanyuan. It has also invited many mainstream media to shoot videos and photos for the promotion of the traditional martial arts culture of Maluo Village. The TV series “The land is so rich in beauty” was shot in the silkworm breeding base, combining traditional culture with folk specialties.
