Located on the banks of the Qiantang River, the Hangzhou Grand Theater was completed in 2004. Covering an area of about 100,000 square meters, it was designed by Canadian designer Carlos Ott and consists of four venues, namely the opera house, concert hall, variable theater and sunken amphitheater as well as an open-air cultural square.

As a cultural landmark of Hangzhou city, the theater has been developing steadily in accordance with the concept of "a stage for artists to show their talents, a palace for the people to enjoy art, and a platform for international cultural exchanges". In 2019 alone it offered more than 500 performances, of which more than 30 percent were international.

Since its establishment, the Hangzhou Grand Theater has presented a great number of audio-visual feasts to audiences, such as the American Broadway musical The Sound of Music, the Disney classic fairy tale trilogy, the Mantovanilight music concert, Yo-Yo Ma's "Silk Road" concert and A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. The theater has also organized a series of activities and cultural projects that greatly promoted the cultivation of art appreciation in Hangzhou.
