A political advisor to Shanghai's legislation will be proposing the establishment of a cooling-off period for marriage registration to the city's annual legislation and political advisory sessions scheduled for late January, according to Shanghai-based online news portal The Paper.

Co-partner of Shanghai Zhong Lun Law Firm Xu Shanshan revealed her proposal on Thursday during a conference by the Shanghai Bar Association.

Xu suggested that there is a need to protect the right to know of couples before marriage , advocate premarital medical examination, and explore the establishment of a marriage registration objection period.

She pointed out that there is no compulsory premarital examination before marriage and this prevents both parties from truly knowing the background of one another.

During the conference, Xu also proposed for the city's free trade zone to introduce facilities that could freeze female eggs.
