Wuhan University in the capital of Central China's Hubei province has ordered another 92 foreign students to quit school, resulting in 181 foreign students in total leaving the institution this year, the local newspaper Chutian Metropolis Daily reported Monday.

An online circular of a notice issued on Nov 29 by the university about how the institution ordered the foreign students to leave has drawn public attention, as netizens said it represented equal treatment for both domestic and foreign students.

Hu Yanchu, head of Wuhan University's School of International Education, said that these 92 students are undergraduates and graduate students. A majority had poor academic performance and some violated school regulations, he said.

Prior to issuing the notice, the school had given early warnings to these foreign students and negotiated with them, before finally ordering them to leave, Hu said.

The university would examine foreign students twice a year since 2014, and in past years, some unqualified students have been ordered to leave. In 2017, 184 students were ordered to leave, and in 2018, there were 109.

Hu said Wuhan University always welcomes good students to study in the campus, and this year 3,573 foreign students from more than 130 countries and regions have registered there.

In recent years, the country's education authority has issued regulations to require universities to strengthen the management of foreign students, to not only attract more students, but also keep an eye on quality.
