Wuhan, capital city of Central China's Hubei province, boasts a longstanding history of more than 3,500 years. As the largest city in Central China, as well as being a renowned historical and cultural city, Wuhan is home to a number of museums across a variety of fields, appealing to the diverse needs of visitors.

Here is a list of recommended museums in Wuhan.

Hubei Provincial Museum

湖北省博物馆 (hú běi shěng bó wù guǎn)

Hubei Provincial Museum, constructed in 1953, is located in Wuhan East Lake scenic area, covering a total area of 81,909 square meters, along with a building area of 49,611 sq m. The exhibition area of the museum amounts to 13,427 sq m.

The museum has the largest exhibition gallery in terms of its scale for ancient instruments in China.

As a national 5A scenic area, Hubei Provincial Museum is listed among one of the eight museums jointly developed by the central and local governments. It is also a State-level comprehensive museum in Hubei province with the largest scale, the most collections, and the strongest scientific prowess.

Wuhan Museum

武汉博物馆 (wǔ hàn bó wù guǎn)

Wuhan Museum, first built in July 1984 and officially opened to the public in 2001, covers a total building area of 17,834 square meters and has an exhibition area of 6,000 sq m. It was listed among the first batch of national first-level museums in May 2008.

The museum has a rich collection of more than 100,000 pieces of precious cultural relics, such as bronze ware, jade ware, inkstone, seal, ceramics, calligraphy, and paintings.

Jianghan Customs Museum

江汉关博物馆 (jiāng hàn guān bó wù guǎn)

Jianghan Customs Museum, covering an overall exhibition area of 2,300 sq m, displays about 10,000 pieces and documents.

As a comprehensive local museum, Jianghan Customs Museum also includes the former residence of Zhan Tianyou, known as the "Father of China's Railroad," and the former site of the national government in Wuhan from December 1926 to August 1927.
