Located in the mid-eastern part of China and on the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, Henan province enjoys a good geographical location and has therefore undertaken the mission of building a modern multimodal traffic and logistics network linking the country's north and south and east and west. As well, it is developing a modern comprehensive transport hub to serve the Belt and Road Initiative. Over recent years, Henan has made great efforts to ensure that a modern and comprehensive transport system, which integrates air lines, main-line railways and high-grade highways, has taken shape in the province.

In the first three months of 2019, Henan's investment in transport infrastructure reached 14.94 billion yuan ($2.17 billion), accounting for 26.4 percent of the annual target.

In the first quarter of this year, Henan invested 7.52 billion yuan in expressway construction, including 5.3 billion yuan on unfinished projects and 1.91 billion yuan for new projects. By the end of 2018, the total highway length in the province had reached 269,000 km, and 6,600 km of expressways were open to traffic, ranking third and fifth in the country. The total length of highways in rural areas had reached 231,000 km, ranking fourth in the country.

In 2019, Henan is expected to spend more than 30 billion yuan on expressway construction, and over 20 billion yuan on highway construction. The province will focus on transport-oriented poverty alleviation projects in rural areas, and more than 5,000 km of rural highways will be rebuilt and transformed this year.

At the same time, Henan will give priority to the construction of the Double Thousand Project, meaning more than 1,000 km of expressways, with a total investment of over 100 billion yuan, will be constructed. The project is expected to come into construction in 2019, and to open to traffic in 2022.
