Established in 1938, Hunan Normal University (HNU) is a famous higher education institution located in Changsha, capital of Central China's Hunan province.

It has five campuses, on 168 hectares, and a construction area of around 1 million square meters. Its picturesque main campus has Yuelu Mountain to the west and the Xiangjiang River to the east. 

The university has a "Humane, Caring, Excellent, Industrious" tradition and follows Hunan's basic development philosophy of serving the country, using its distinct features, and joining the world's top universities.

It has 23 colleges with a full range of disciplines with teacher education as its strongest, and offers 71 undergraduate, 147 masters, and 55 Ph.D. programs. 

The library of the university has a collection of 3.17 million books, including 200,000 volumes of old traditional thread bound books, and subscriptions to 4,700 Chinese and foreign periodicals. There are 12 academic periodicals distributed to the public at home and abroad. The university has its own publishing house called Hunan Normal University Press. 

HNU highly values academic exchanges with foreign universities and educational institutions. It has established relations with nearly 100 foreign institutions of higher education for academic exchange. 

The International College of Chinese Language and Culture of the university is specially designed to offer Chinese courses to the overseas students. Currently more than 130 foreign students study at HNU. The university also offers BA, MA, and Ph.D. programs and short-term training programs in almost all subjects for international students.
