Founded in 1902, Nanjing University (NJU) is a century-old university and enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad. The historical development of the university has been closely connected with the mission of the nation and the needs of society. The vision of NJU is to build itself into a world-class comprehensive, research-intensive and internationalized higher learning institution oriented towards “high-caliber faculty, top-notch students and cutting-edge research”. NJU consists of three beautiful campuses, Gulou, Xianlin, and Pukou. Its current President is Dr. Jun CHEN, professor in geochemistry, and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.  

Presently, NJU has over 33,205 full-time students, among whom about 14,188 are undergraduate students, 15,667 master and doctoral students, and 3,350 international students. NJU has 28 schools containing 73 departments and runs 8 national key disciplines in the primary disciplinary categories, 13 national key disciplines in secondary categories, and 6 national key disciplines on the fostering list. NJU is listed as one of the first group of high-level universities in the national "211 Project" and "985 Project", which provide heavy funding from the central government. As a member of the China 9 League (C9), NJU boasts a strong team of faculty with humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medicine and engineering.

In its over 100 years' history, NJU has cultivated a great number of prominent and learned figures, and thus has greatly contributed to the nation's revitalization and development. Many famous scientists and scholars have studied or worked here. Among 2251 faculty members, there are 28 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 Academicians of the Third World Academy of Sciences, 1 Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and 1 Academician of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada. In addition, there are 115 Chair Professors and Distinguished Visiting Professors of the "Chang Jiang Scholars Program", 97 winners of "National Distinguished Young Scientists Award", 29 overseas scholars under the "National Thousand Talents Plan”, and 45 awardees of the "National Youth Thousand Talents Plan".

NJU is one of the leading comprehensive universities in China in different national and international rankings in terms of various indexes and comprehensive strength. According to the Essential Science Indicators, 13 academic disciplines at NJU are ranked in the top 1% worldwide, ranking top among Chinese universities. In the world ranking of university discipline published by QS 2014, NJU has 20 disciplines listed in the global top 200.

Over the past decade, NJU has acquired more than 800 national, provincial and ministerial awards for research. Since 2000, NJU has won 1 First Prize, and 18 Second Prizes of National Natural Science Award, 6 National Scientific and Technological Progress Second Prizes, 4 State Technological Award Second Prizes, which is in the leading position among other Chinese universities. In 2006, a project accomplished by NJU physicists led by Academician Nai-ben MING won the First Prize of National Natural Science Award, which is the highest award for natural scientific research in China. The project was the only one accomplished independently by a mainland Chinese university which won a First Prize.

In recent years, NJU has undertaken dozens of state key projects. In addition, NJU ranks top among Chinese universities in terms of the quality and quantity of research papers listed in the Science Citation Index (SCI). The number of SCI publications of NJU was ranked first among Chinese universities for seven years since 1992, and had the highest number of citations of SCI papers for eight years since 1992. In 2013, NJU was ranked fourth among Chinese universities in the Nature Publishing Index. In 2014, NJU was ranked 38th in the Global Nature Index and fourth for China. In 2015, NJU was ranked 38th in the world and 7th in the Asia-Pacific Nature Index, and also fourth for China.

NJU houses a good number of national innovative research bases. Now it has 7 State Key Laboratories, 1 National Engineering Technology Research Center, 1 National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center, 1 National Resource Center for Mutant Mice, 8 MOE Key laboratories, and 2 National Collaborative Innovation Centers for South China Sea Studies and Advanced Microstructures. 

Besides basic scientific research, NJU also puts a lot of efforts in applied scientific research and engineering to promote the economic and social development. So far, NJU has established 23 platforms involving cooperation among government, industry and university, to boost the industry-academia cooperation and local economy, relating to such areas as new materials, electronic information, bio-pharmaceuticals, environment & resources, and fine chemicals.

NJU is very active in international cooperation and academic exchanges. So far, it has established partnership with over 280 institutions of higher learning and research institutes from more than 30 different countries. NJU has never ceased its efforts to explore international cooperation. Such efforts resulted in the establishment of the Center for Chinese and American Studies with Johns Hopkins University, the Sino-German Institute for Law Studies with Goettingen University, and the Center for Chinese and Japanese Studies with Tokyo University, etc.

Many world-renowned scholars, including Nobel Prize laureates, are honorary or visiting professors of NJU. In 2011, Professor Aaron CIECHANOVER, who is Nobel Laureate for Chemistry in the year 2004, was invited to serve as Director for the Institute of Chemistry and BioMedical Sciences of NJU. In 2013, Professor Jean Marie Gustave LE CLEZIO, Nobel Laureate for literature in the year 2008 was invited to serve as "Distinguished Resident Scholar" of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences of NJU and offers courses for students.
