Zigong High-Tech Industrial Development Zone was founded in 1992 with the approval of the Sichuan provincial government and upgraded to a national-level high-tech industrial development zone on 22 June, 2011 by the State Council.

After 26 years the zone now covers 65 square kilometers and has forged a development pattern of "one district and three parks". Focusing on the country's Made in China 2025 industry upgrading plan and Sichuan's high-end emerging industries, the zone aims to build an industrial system of energy-saving and environmental protection, equipment manufacturing, new materials, electronic information and biological medicine.

To date, more than 7,000 enterprises have chosen to be based in the zone. They had  overall turnover exceeding 70 billion yuan ($10.4 billion) last year, an annual increase of 15 percent.

By the end of 2017, the output value of the zone's strategic and emerging industries accounted for 37 percent of the gross industrial output value; for high-tech industries, the figure was 34 percent. The annual growth rate of the modern service industry including logistics and e-commerce maintained an annual increase of 15 percent.

The zone is home to more than 100 research and development institutions, ranking second among all development zones in Sichuan.

In 2018, the zone achieved a GDP growth of some 10.5 percent. The growth rates of the value added for the above-scale industries, the tertiary sector and fixed-asset investment recorded 13.5 percent, 10.7 percent and 35.1 percent, respectively. The gross output value of the equipment manufacturing on energy-saving and environmental protection industries, electronic information and new materials amounted to 14.2 billion yuan, up 17.6 percent year-on-year.
