Ningbo started construction of the third generation of the semi-conductor industry 17 years ago. A relatively complete industrial chain has been formed in semi-conductor equipment and material, involving chip development and design, package testing and back-end applications.

Ningbo has many industrial advantages in terms of developing the third generation of the semi-conductor industry. For instance, various downstream areas such as lighting, automotive and consumer electronics are undergoing industrial transformation and upgrading. Advanced semi-conductor products are needed to help boost the process.

Ningbo will launch a project called Technology Innovation 2025, granting two billion yuan ($298 million) to eight local industries, including the third generation of the semi-conductor industry.

It is expected that the industry will develop cutting-edge technologies and be a global leader in the semi-conductor area.

At the beginning of 2019, Prema Semi-conductor Co Ltd from Germany signed an integrated device manufacturing (IDM) project with Ningbo, with a total investment of five billion yuan. It is expected to generate sales volume of 7.2 billion yuan.

Enterprises such as Semiconductor Integrated Circuit (Ningbo) Co Ltd, Anji Microelectronics and Taiwan Hengshuo have also settled in the city.

The first three quarters of 2018 saw an industrial output value of 14.7 billion yuan being achieved in semi-conductor industry, a year-on-year growth of 11.2 percent.
