Adhering to the university motto "Contemplation, Honesty, Erudition, Creativity", Guizhou Normal University (GZNU) is committed to teachers' education and have trained 260,000 graduates who are widely appreciated for their abilities and dedication.

Founded in 1941, the university was originally named as National Guiyang Teachers' College, and renamed as Guiyang Teachers' College in 1950. In 1985, it was formally entitled Guizhou Normal University and honored as one of the provincial key universities in 1996.

With a total area of 187 hectares, the three campuses of GZNU are all located in Guiyang, the capital city of southwest China's Guizhou province, which also enjoys the reputation of "China's best summer resort" with its pleasant climate and abundant natural resources.

Offering 11 disciplines of Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Management and Arts, GZNU consists of 24 Schools. The School of Further Education and an Independent College (Qiushi College) have more than 36,000 full-time students and a faculty team of over 2,600 members.

As of the end of 2018, the university offers 79 different undergraduate majors, six doctoral and 22 master's degree programs for first-level disciplines (covering 32 and 107 degree programs for second-level disciplines respectively), six independent and nine specialized master's degree programs for second-level disciplines. The university also enjoys the privilege of recommending excellent fresh undergraduates to pursue their graduate education without examinations.

GZNU is expanding international cooperation with partners from all over the world and has made it a strategic priority in its development planning to go global. It has established partnerships with universities, colleges and institutions in the United States, Portugal, Russia, Australia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia and more.

GZNU encourages its colleges and departments to cultivate a global vision by inviting foreign experts to give lectures in campuses every year, and sending GZNU teachers abroad for teaching programs or academic visits.

The China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week, held in Guiyang, is an important international event supported by GZNU, offering opportunities for global collaboration and exchanges. The university has also built the Chinese Language Center with I.Y. Yakovlev Chuvash State Pedagogical University, Russia.

GZNU has an independent apartment building for overseas students. Each student enjoys a single room, a private bathroom and a full range of shared facilities. Free internet access and air conditions, and 24-hour hot water supply are all available.
