By the end of 2017, railway lines in Nantong had covered 220 kilometers, including the Xinchang (Jiangsu's Xinyi-Zhejiang's Changxing) Railway, Ningqi (Nanjing-Qidong) Railway and Haiyang (Haian-Yangkou port) Railway.

In 2017, Nantong invested 3.23 billion yuan ($47.90 million) in pushing forward the construction of projects such as the Hutong (Shanghai-Nantong) Railway and the second phase of the Ningqi (Nanjing-Qidong) Railway.

Currently Nantong has five passenger railway stations – Nantong, Rugao, Haian, Bencha and Rudong – with total annual passenger throughput of 4.61 million, up 21.04 percent year-on-year, the highest figure in its history.

Nantong also has four freight stations: East Nantong, Rugao, Haian and Bencha. The total annual cargo throughput reached 1.10 tons, up 4.52 percent year-on-year.

A total of 23 pairs of trains leave from Nantong, including 14 pairs of CRH (China Railway High-speed) bullet trains running to Nanjing, Hankou and Chongqing, and nine pairs of normal speed trains departing for Beijing, Jilin, Jinan, Luoyang, Taiyuan, Xi'an, Chongqing and Kunming. The trains stop at 103 stations in 13 provinces and municipalities directly under the Central Government, namely Beijing, Tianjin, Chongqing, Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hubei, Hunan, Hebei, Yunnan and Guizhou.

In December 2017, a pair of CRH (China Railway High-speed) bullet trains running between Nanjing and Nantong was launched, reducing travel time between the two cities to one hour and 59 minutes.

In January 2019, a section of the Ningqi (Nanjing-Qidong) Railway between Nantong and Qidong started operations. During the early running, three pairs of CRH (China Railway High-speed) bullet trains were put into use.
