China's Snow Town, Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang

These days China's Snow Town, a renowned ice and snow resort in northeast China's Heilongjiang province, is a booming tourist destination, with visitors coming from far and wide to the picturesque village that sits at the southern foot of Chinghai Mountain, covering an area of 500 hectares and sitting 1,200 meters above sea level.

This town frequently experiences heavy snowfall and is covered in snow for up to seven months at a time due to the influence of the Siberian cold front and warm current from the Sea of Japan. Indeed, it is commonly said that a person will never see the sun for three consecutive days in China's Snow Town.

While the lowest temperature in Heilongjiang province reaches around -40 C, the extreme cold didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of tourists, who still came out to watch boiling water instantly turn into ice mist by tossing it into the air. [Photo/VCG]

Snowfall in the town can be up to two meters deep, and the village sees more snow than almost anywhere else in China. In particular, the village is known for its "snow mushrooms", the shape formed by deep snow sitting on the roofs of local houses.

With its traditional houses, pine trees and winter scenery, it's not hard to see why the town is so popular with tourists.
