The memorial museum is located in the hometown of Mao Zedong (1893-1976), one of the major leaders and founding fathers of the Communist Party of China, the People's Liberation Army, and the People's Republic of China. It is dedicated to the memory of this great Marxist and proletarian revolutionary, strategist, and theorist.

A native of Hunan province, Mao Zedong was born to a peasant family. He spent his childhood and adolescence in a small village before leaving to pursue further studies. Besides the 17 exhibition rooms, the memorial museum also encompasses the former residence of Mao - a courtyard of countryside cottages, the site of the private school he attended, a bronze statue of him, and sites of his family shrines. Of the 63,000 pieces from the museum’s collection of cultural relics and documents over 6,400 are items used by Mao in his late years. Permanent exhibitions feature the political achievement of Mao Zedong, items used and left by him, and the revolutionary tradition of Mao's family, introducing his life story, achievements, philosophy, and charismatic personality.
