Established in 1992 in a province whose coal production is ranked among the top in the nation, the Coal Museum houses cultural relics, specimens, documents and materials from the national coal industry. It is also a coal-related science education and research institution.

Permanent exhibitions present several aspects related to this natural resource, including the occurring of coal, coal mining, the relation between coal and humanity, coal extraction technologies, China’s contemporary coal industry, coal art, archives, and Sino-foreign exchanges. You can even walk through a replica pit to experience the underground environment experienced by coal miners of different historical periods. The simulated colliery covering 3,200 square meters is the largest underground simulated coal pit in Asia, with 800 meters of routes to explore. The museum also features a gallery space reserved for real-size collotype prints of extant historical murals across Shanxi. The reproduced murals cover 250 square meters, bearing images on such subjects as Buddhism, Daoism and secular life.
