Laiyang lamp bowl (莱阳灯碗)

Laiyang lamp bowl is a traditional folk custom popular in Yantai's Laiayang city. It evolved from the custom of Lantern Festival.

The incredible craftsmanship can be date back to Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Laiyang people made the bean flour into delicate 12 lamps representing 12 month. Put oil into the lamps and ignite. People use the remaining oil to predict the next year's drought and flood.  

To make lamp bowl, handcraft man firstly knead dough into the prototype of the lamp,and them use a comb, scissors, matches, bamboo or mung bean as a tool to make a deep process to make them into various shapes such as pig, fish or dragon.
