Located at 68 Guoxing Avenue in Haikou city, south China's Hainan province, the Hainan Museum covers an area of more than 44,500 square meters and its exhibition hall covers an area of 12,000 square meters. Being one of major cultural construction projects of the Twelfth Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), the museum is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Hainan. Planned since 1984, the first phase opened on Nov 15, 2008 and the second on May 18, 2017. It is a comprehensive museum, focusing on the history of the South China Sea, the Maritime Silk Road, marine living, mineral resources and energy

Hainan has long been a place of cultural exchange and interaction. Home to Han, Li, Miao, Hui and many other ethnic groups for hundreds or even thousands of years, Hainan has nurtured a rich and splendid island culture through integration and development of multi-ethnic lifestyles. With an exhibition theme of "south seas with fertile soil", the Hainan Museum created its own exhibition system, including "maritime civilization in the South China Sea", "Hainan's history" and "local culture and customs in Hainan"; it also has two thematic exhibitions "Hainan Huanghuali" and "Hainan agilawoo", both of which are among the most precious woods in the world, and grow on Hainan Island. There are also four intangible cultural heritage exhibitions.

The Tang Sancai horse of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) and a Qi ancient sword belonging to the King of Yue during the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) are distinctive collection representatives of the museum.

With the application of new technologies, the Hainan Museum provides visitors an overall demonstration of Hainan. Visiting it is like passing through a time tunnel and returning to old and colorful places.

Entry: Perhaps the most educational tourist destination of Hainan, the Hainan Museum has received more than 6.4 million visitors since its opening in 2008.
