Located in the conjoining area of Asia and the Pacific Ocean, Hainan island is roughly equidistant between Japan and Singapore. It is an important maritime transportation route connecting two major water systems: the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. Therefore, Hainan island enjoys very unique geographical advantages.

With a total coastline of 1,944.35 kilometers, Hainan island boasts five natural deep-water ports and is only 111.12 kilometers away from the main route of Eurasia international maritime transportation. Close to the Chinese mainland, Hainan is separated from Guangdong Leizhou Peninsula by Qiongzhou Strait which is 33.34 km wide, faces the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, and neighbors major international markets including the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. It is building a pan-South China Sea international trade and shipping hub, and vigorously promoting the connectivity in air and sea transportation with countries and regions along the Belt and Road route.

A total of 45 international flights and 370 domestic flights have been launched. Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macao and the Pearl River Delta region of China can be reached with one hour of flight, while the Philippines, Brunei, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and China's Yangtze River Delta region can be reached within two hours. It will take only three hours to fly to such areas as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, South Korea, Japan, and China's Bohai Sea area. All major commercial cities in Southeast Asia are within five hours of flight.
