Formerly known as the Qingdao campus of China Ocean University which was established in 2005, Qingdao Institute of Technology has been an independent private undergraduate university since its transformation in 2011 with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
The university provides both undergraduate and junior college education, with 11,334 full-time students, including 10,164 undergraduates.
