Tianjin Medical University

Tianjin Medical University's predecessor was Tianjin Medical College, which was established in 1951.  The first president of the university was Professor Xianyi ZHU, a renowned endocrinologist and medical educationist.   In June 1994, Tianjin Medical College and Tianjin Second Medical College merged to form Tianjin Medical University (TMU), and in December 1996, Tianjin Medical University formally became one of the national “211 Project” key universities in China,  the only one in Tianjin.  In October 2015,  it became a university jointly developed by People’s Government of Tianjin,  National Health and Family Planning Commission and Ministry of Education.   In September 2017,   Tianjin Medical University was selected to be a university included in the national development plan of first-class disciplines.

The university actively devoted itself to the national higher education in medical field,  and was one of the two earliest nationally-authorized medical institutions that pilot eight-year-long medical education;  it was also one of the first 15 institutions to pilot seven-year-long medical education.  Currently, the university has two campuses and six university hospitals.  The university now has 21 disciplines authorized to confer Bachelor’s degree; it consists of 18 schools and 2 branches.  There are 9687 full-time students studying at the university, of these students,  5162 are undergraduates,  3089 are Master’s students,  465 are PhD students and 971 are international students. 

The university (including the university hospitals) currently has 8189 professional and technical faculty members.   Among these, 633 are professors,   1072 are associate professors,   and 669 are full-time teachers within the university on the campus.   The university has 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences,  2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 6 national “Thousand Talent Plan” professors, 1 scholar of Youth Project, 6 specially appointed professors and 5 visiting professors of “Yangtze Scholars” approved by the Ministry of Education, 2 “Young Scholars” and 3 Innovation Teams; 4 “973” chief scientists appointed by the Ministry of Science and Technology; 6 winners of the “National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars” and 5 winners of the “Science Fund for Outstanding Youth”; 8 persons of the “National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project”, 4 leading experts of the national “Ten Thousand Talents Plan” and 1 Tip-Top young talent; 10 experts with outstanding contributions appointed by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and 8 young or middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions appointed by the National Health and Family Planning Commission. 

Currently,  TMU has 5 national characteristic subjects,  1 “experimental unit” of national-level specialty comprehensive reform,  2 national teaching teams,  13 Tianjin teaching teams,  1 nationally outstanding teacher and 22 Tianjin municipal-level outstanding teachers.  The university also has 7 national signature courses, 5 national signature resource-sharing courses,  3 national signature video open courses,  3 national bilingual demonstration courses,  8 brand courses of teaching international students in English approved by the Ministry of Education, 3 national innovative experimental zones of talent cultivation mode, 3 national demonstration centers of experimental teaching,  2 national-level university student extracurricular innovation practice bases and 74 projects of national-level university student innovation and entrepreneurship training plan.

TMU received excellent appraisals in undergraduate and seven-year education assessments by the Ministry of Education in 2002 and 2008. Our Nursing and Dentistry passed the professional accreditations by the Ministry of Education in 2012 and 2013 respectively,   and our Clinical Medicine successfully passed the international accred-itation in 2014. Since 2009, TMU has won 1 first prize and 1 second prize of national teaching achievement and 6 first prizes of municipal teaching achievement. TMU estab-lished the International School of Integrated Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine in 1997, and changed its name to International Medical School in 2010. It has international students coming from 47 countries, and its international education plays a leading role among the national medical universities in terms of scale and quality.   Its study on “Establishment and Practice of Quality Assurance System for Teaching International Students Clinical Medicine in English” won the first prize in the National Teaching Achievement Awards.   In addition,   the university was approved by the Ministry of Education as the first Training Center for Medical Teachers Teaching International Students in English”.

Currently the university has 7 first-level and 42 second-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees; 11 first-level and 74 second-level disciplines authorized to confer Master’s degrees. It has 6 post-doctoral research stations. And there are 1034 Master’s supervisors and 324 doctoral supervisors. 

The university has 5 national key disciplines, 10 key development disciplines of “211 Project”, 18 Tianjin municipal key disciplines, 5 disciplines that has entered into the top one percent by Essential Science Indicators (ESI) ranking; it also possesses 15 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, 15 research institutes and has built the Tianjin collaborative innovation center of medical epigenetics. Since the tenth “Five-year Plan”,  Tianjin Medical University has undertaken  3177  provincial and ministerial or above research projects, and obtained 279 awards at these levels, including 6 National Science and Technology Awards and  20 first-prizes of provincial and ministerial Science and Technology Awards.  In 2016,  TMU was approved as the   “  Demonstration Base of Innovative Personnel Training  ” by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The university hospitals have 13 medical specialties which have been selected into the national clinical key specialty development projects,and Cancer Institute and Hospital is  among the first batch of national medical research centers of clinical oncology. TMU has 6 directly subordinate hospitals, and 15 non-directly subordinate clinical hospitals. 

Our university has established academic exchange programs and cooperative rela-tions with 96 universities from 22 countries, carrying out high-level international collaborations in medicine and biomedicine. We have appointed 119 renowned medical experts and professors as honorary and visiting professors and established the “Foreign Experts Advisory Committee”, aiming to promote the international development of our university. 

Over the 60 years since the founding of TMU, we have cultivated a large amount of excellent medical specialists at all levels,   such as academician Xishan HAO and aca-demician Ying GU, et al. With medical science as the core and life science as the main foundation, the university coordinates the disciplinary developments of medicine, scie-nce, engineering, arts, law and management. In recent years, TMU has concentrated on enhancing its core competitiveness in an all-round way and making consistent efforts to create a healthy and progressive campus culture, in a bid to develop itself into a high-level research type medical university.
