Marriage Registration

Required documents:

I. Hong Kong residents:

1. Mainland Travel Permit (MTP) or Home Return Permit;

2. Hong Kong Identification Card;

3. A statement notarized by Hong Kong notary public office which declares that the applicant has no spouse and the opposite party is not lineal relatives of him/her by blood, or sanguinity within three generations.

II. Macao residents:

1. Mainland Travel Permit (MTP) or Home Return Permit;

2. Macao Identification Card;

3. A statement notarized by Macao notary public office which declares that the applicant has no spouse and the opposite party is not lineal relatives of him/her by blood, or sanguinity within three generations.

III. Taiwan residents:

1. Mainland Travel Permit (MTP) or Home Return Permit;

2. Taiwan Identification Card;

3. A statement notarized by Taiwan notary public office which declares that the applicant has no spouse and the opposite party is not lineal relatives of the applicant by blood, or sanguinity within three generations.

IV. Overseas Chinese:

1. A valid passport;

2. A certificate, which declares that the applicant has no spouse and the opposite party is not lineal relatives of the applicant by blood, or sanguinity within three generations, shall be provided by the notary office in his or her country and be authenticated by the Chinese embassy (consulate) in this country, or issued directly by the Chinese embassy (consulate) in this country;

A certificate provided by an applicant from a country without diplomatic relationship with China shall be authenticated by the third country with diplomatic relationship with China and Chinese embassy (consulate) in the third country, or the third country’s embassy (consulate) in China.

V. Foreigners:

1. A valid passport or other valid international travel certificates;

2. A certificate, which declares that the applicant has no spouse and the opposite party is not lineal relatives of the applicant by blood, or sanguinity within three generations, shall be provided by the notary office in his or her country and be authenticated by the Chinese embassy (consulate) in this country, or issued directly by the Chinese embassy (consulate) in this country;

A certificate provided by an applicant from a country without diplomatic relationship with China shall be authenticated by the third country with diplomatic relationship with China and Chinese embassy (consulate) in the third country, or the third country’s embassy (consulate) in China.

Registration procedure

The procedure of marriage registration includes pre-review, acceptance, review and certificate issue.

I. Pre-review and acceptance:

1. Check the required certificates;

2. Inquire the marriage willingness of both parties;

3. Both parties fill in the form of Affidavit on Application for Registration of Marriage

The declarants must sign signatures in the presence of marriage registration officer. The box of “declarant signature” cannot be empty, or written or fingerprinted by others. For those who cannot write, they are allowed to give an oral declaration which will be written by the marriage registrar. The marriage registrar shall read out the declaration for the declarant after writing to confirm the accuracy. Then the declarant must leave his/her fingerprint in the “declarant box.”

4. Applicants read their declaration and the marriage registration officer shall sign signature as witness.

II. Review

The marriage authority reviews the applicants’ certificates and declaration. For eligible applicants, the marriage authority shall fill in the form of Marriage Registration Review.

III. Certificate issue

The certificate will be issued with both parties on spot.

1. Check the applicants’ name, birth date and marriage willingness;

2. Inform the applicants with the legal relationship, rights and obligation after receiving the marriage certificates;

3. Certificate receipt sign signatures in the “applicant box.” Fingerprint is allowed for those who cannot write. The “applicant box” cannot be empty, or written or fingerprinted by others.

4. The marriage registrar issues marriage licenses;

5. Congratulate the new couple.
