Zhuhai is an innovative pioneer in China through implementation of the national Reform & Opening-up policy. It is rated as one of the most livable, appealing and business-friendly city in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Livability

Zhuhai has received the International Award for Most Improved Living Environment from the United Nations, thanks to efforts by city planners and the local government, making it one of the "Most Livable Places". This environmentally livable city at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta is becoming enamored by the rest of the world.

Zhuhai stood first out of 284 Chinese cities in health index for the third consecutive year in the Green Book of Eco-Cities released by Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Oct 31, 2017. The document was formally known as the Report on the Construction & Development of China's Eco-Cities (2017), and cited 16 cities with the best health. It is also one of the first of China's National Model Cities for Environmental Protection, and one of the first state-level Ecologically Model Cities.

Transportation

Zhuhai, just outside Macao, is the traffic hub of the west coast of Pearl River Estuary. Based on the three pillars of "harbor, airport and customs," Zhuhai has gradually shaped a three-pronged transport network that reaches Hong Kong and Macao and connects Zhuhai with the rest of China.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is an ongoing construction project that will connect Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai. The proposed 55km link is expected to be completed by the end of 2017. Zhuhai will be the first city with land links to Hong Kong and Macao then.

Gaolan is one of the leading international ports in Guangdong Province. This natural deep-water port is located in the southwest of Zhuhai. It has 45 production berths, of which 20 are designed for over 10,000 tons as of 2015. Specializing in petrochemicals, energy, and equipment manufacture, the port handled 107 million tons of cargo in 2014. Companies in residence include BP, Royal Dutch/Shell, BMW, China National Petroleum, Hutchison Whampoa, SinoChem, COSCO and a growing number of other World Top 500 Enterprises.

Zhuhai Airport increased the number of operational airlines to 25 in 2016, with 55 routes going to 42 cities nationwide. Sixty percent of the airline destinations have two or more flights. With more than 1,200 flights every week, the airport has formed a network layout centered on Beijing and Shanghai with high-density flights to major cities.  The airport's passenger throughput is expected to reach 12 million by 2020..

In the meantime, huge-scale transport infrastructure construction has allowed new space for urban development. Some 55.82 billion yuan ($8.08 billion) has been spent over the past five years building transport infrastructure to make Zhuhai a transport hub on the west bank of Pearl River Estuary. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has been fully connected, which is to bring Zhuhai's 30-year "bridge dream" to realization. On the other hand, the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Railway, Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity MRT, and Airport and Gaolan Port expressways have come into service.

The Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity MRT railway line that connects Guangzhou, Foshan, Jiangmen and Zhuhai is working on its extension lines. "Two-center three-level" passenger and cargo transport hub systems connecting three logistics parks and eight logistics centers are to form a crisscross network that reinforces Zhuhai as a hub city on the west bank of the Pearl River Delta, according to the Integrated Transportation Hubs Layout Plan & Detailed Plan for Major Transportation Hubs of Zhuhai City.

The Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway, Taiyuan-Macao Expressway, Guangdong Western Coastal Expressway and Jiangmen-Zhuhai Expressway all pass through Zhuhai and link the Chinese mainland with Hong Kong and Macao.

Industries

The city has six basic industries: electronic information, appliances, energy, medicine, petrochemicals, and precision machinery. It also has two more unique industries: printing consumables and yacht manufacturing. More than 30 listed enterprises have headquarters in Zhuhai, such as Gree Electric Appliances and Livzon Pharmaceutical Group. More than 50 Fortune Global 500 companies have investment projects in Zhuhai, including BP, Shell, Bosch, Canon, Flextronics International Ltd, Philips, CNOOC, SINOPEC, AVIC and Shenhua Group.

Talent resources

Ten universities have campuses in Zhuhai, including Sun Yat-Sen University, Jinan University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Jilin University, Zunyi Medical College, Guangdong Institute of Science and Technology, and United International College (jointly run by Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University).

By the end of 2014, there were nearly 127,000 college students in Zhuhai.

Service & Efficiency

Zhuhai has simplified the process of industrial and commercial registration. In order to improve efficiency, Customs CIQ, Immigration Control and other joint inspection units will actively carry out one-stop and parallel examinations and approvals.

A full-fledged financial system is in place. Financial institutions operating in Zhuhai include Morgan Stanley, the Bank of East Asia and Standard Chartered.
