The Bund

The Bund, also known as Zhongshan First East Road, measures out to be 1.5 kilometers in length. The Bund's starting point is Yanan East Road located in the south and it extends upto the Waibaidu Bridge on Suzhou Creek in the north. On the eastern side of the Bund, lies the Huangpu River. To its west are 52 gothic and baroque styled classic buildings of, housing old Shanghai’s financial institutions and trading companies. With all these spots, the Bund is now acclaimed as an outdoor museum of international architecture.

The Huangpu River, located in the east of the Bund, is the largest river flowing through downtown Shanghai. It rises at Longwang Mountain Nature Reserve close to Anji county in Zhejiang province. It experiences the ebb and flow of tides two times a day and the water levels drop down to as low as 4 meters. Facing the Huangpu River, the Bund has been a symbol of the city for over 100 years. therefore also known as Shanghai's mother river.  Shanghai’s legendary past is evident in the Bund, while it also thoroughly demonstrates the city’s remarkable ability to absorb diverse foreign cultures. The serene river, the long dyke and the green belt against the dazzling backdrop of elegant buildings makes the Bund Shanghai’s signature spot. In the morning, the Bund is filled with the early birds exercising. In daytime, it is a bustling attraction, both for tourists and the locals. In the evening, the buildings light up along the Bund resembling crystal palaces, while amazing its visitors with its unforgettable night vistas.
