Infrastructure: hub of commodity transhippings in NE China 

Port 

Established in 1899, Dalian's port was the third largest international port for foreign trade in China. There are 65 berths in the port, namely for crude oil, petroleum products, coal, steel, lumber, containers and break-bulk. 35 of them are with the berthing capacity of 80 million tons of goods per year. Dalian has established  international trade relationship with more than 150 regions and countries in the world. The Dayaowan port, which is currently under construction, with 100 deep-sea berths and an annual capacity of handling 80 million tons of goods, is going to be the largest deep-water harbor for transferring containers.

Airport

Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport, connects 47 cities both at home and abroad. It has 49 domestic and international air routes. Its landing tracks are also large enough to accommodate Boeing 747s.

Railways

Dalian railway network connects both the northeast and the northern part of China.

Highways

The total length of Dalian's highways is 4,091 kilometers. 62 bus routes run through the city of Dalian, carrying nearly three million passengers a day.

Post and telecommunications

Post and telecommunications in Dalian, including international correspondence, international phone calls and international telegraphs can reach more than 190 regions and countries. More than 50 service items are provided, including mobile communication, radio call, packet switching, DDN, CHINANET and EMS. Telecommunications between urban and rural areas are digitally controlled by computers.

Power supply

The power stations have a capacity of 50 million kilowatts. There are five power stations in Dalian and there are 12 generator sets with the total installed capacity of 1.1 million kw.

Water supply

The total volume of fresh water in Dalian is 4.9 billion cubic meters per year, 36.1 billion is surface water and the other 13.3 billion cubic meters per year is ground water. The biggest river, Biliu River, is the source for inter-basin division. There are 10 water supply reservoirs in Dalian, with a total supply of one billion cubic meters. Dalian has nine purification plants and tap water is available in all of its urban areas.

Gas supply

There are two plants in Dalian for gas production with a capacity to produce 660 thousand cubic meters of gas per day. The total length of its gas pipes are 1627 kilometers.

Heat supply

88.2 percent of urban households in Dalian have heating in winter.

Natural resources

Dalian covers an area of 12,574 square kilometers, among which 2,415 square kilometers of the area is its old city. The entire area has an abundance of mountains and hills. The Yellow Sea Water System and the Bohai Water System provide fresh water of 3.8 billion cubic meters per year.

Land Resources

Dalian consists of 6 different types of soils. Dalian has 907,000 hectares of brown zonal soil, amounting to 81.5 percent of the total; meadow soil, paddy soil, sand soil, saline soil and boggy soil take up the other 18.5 percent. Tideland totaled 66,000 hectares, occupying 5.2 percent of the city's total land area, including 42,000 hectares in the Yellow Sea and 24,000 hectares in the Bohai Sea.

Biological Resources

Dalian is suitable for the growth of both animals and plants due to its pleasant climate and advantageous natural and ecological environments. The plant life includes 110 kinds of oil plants, 120 kinds of medicinal plants, 50 kinds of traditional Chinese herbs and more than 50 kinds of plants for extracting starch or manufacturing wine. Dalian is also renowned for the production of apples. In addition, the city is a large producer of hawthorn fruits, grapes and yellow peaches. In recent years, people in Dalian have begun to grow strawberries. There are more than 150 kinds of seaweed, including chlorophyta,brown algae and red algae and 50 kinds of cash crops. Kelp and wakame are also quite popular and people have started to plant these crops. Dalian has plenty of sea products, including fish and shrimp, abalone, apostichopus, japonicus selenka, scallops, anthocidaris crassispina and snails.

Mineral Resources

Nearly 30 types of metals, non-metals, geothermal energy and mineral water resources have been discovered in more than 500 locations in Dalian. Non-metals such as limestone, silica, diamonds, amianthus,magnesite and talcum are of great value. The total amount of diamonds discovered in Dalian accounts for 54 percent of the entire nation's reserve. Limestone is primarily scattered in Ganjingzi District and Wufangdian District, accounting for one-third of the proved reserves of Liaoning province. Metals discovered in Wufangdian District and Wafangdian District include over 70 iron ores, 40 copper ores, 20 lead ores and other rare metals.
