Guangzhou Acrobatic Troupe

The Guangzhou Acrobatic Troupe was founded in 1957. The troupe has carried on the traditional of Chinese folk acrobatics and at the same time absorbed the cream of other art forms such as dancing, artistic gymnastics, drama and clown acting to form a unique style of Lingnan in South China. Over 50 programs they created have won various grand prizes. In 1979, the troupe won the First Prize for best performance issued by the Ministry of Culture on the occasion of celebrating the 30 anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. In 1981, two of its programs Rolling Cups and Juggling of Bowls won the Presidential Prize and Prize of the Mayor of Charters at the 5th Festival Mondial Du Cirque De L'Avenir respectively. In 1988, its Kicking Bowls on a High Bike won the only Golden K Prize at the Monaco International Acrobatic Competition. In 1995, its Passing Rings on Jumping Net and Magic won the Gold Prize at the 5th Wuqiao International Acrobatic Contest respectively, and with the former also won the Gold Prize at the 9th International Circus Festival la Piste aux Espoirs in Belgium in 1996. Both of its programs Juggling on Swing and Ball Skills won the only Golden K Prize and the Silver K Prize respectively at the 9th Monaco International Acrobatics Contest. In 1998, its Uncle Clown won the first Gold Chrysanthemm Prize at Chinese Acrobatics Contest and the First Prize at the Clown-acting Contest. In September of the same year, its Juggling of Bowls and Ball Skills won the Gold Lion Prize at the 3rd National Children's Acrobatic Competition,

The troupe has been invited to perform in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, South Africa, Mauritius, Canada, U.S.A., Peru and etc.. In recent year, the troupe has produced the large-scale folk acrobatic show entitled Southern Melody and the A Gathering of Stars, a show of all the prize-winning programs. Between 1997 and 1999, the Southern Melody toured Germany as well as Hong Kong and Macao regions in a succession of three years and won the popular acclaim.

The leading acrobats in the troupe include Liang Yi, know for his performance in Cutting from the Waist and Piecing the Heart; Li Chunlai, known for Uncle Clown and Li Xuexia, known for her show in Juggling Bowls and Rolling Cups.
