An announcement was released by National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in May 2016 about the establishment of national and provincial economic development zones in the Yangtze River Economic Belt as demonstrations areas for transformation and upgrading.

The document listed 33 economic development zones, including Jiangsu’s Suzhou Industrial Park, Zhejiang’s Hangzhou Economic and Technological Development Area and Hubei’s Jingzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone.

With this new move in the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the government was attaching greater importance to the construction of ecological civilization by pursuing innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development.

NDRC would offer overall coordination in the transformation of these demonstration zones and carry out dynamic management in the whole process.

Following the construction requirements, local development and reform commissions would enhance guidance based on the priorities of ecology and key tasks in transforming development modes and system innovation.

Demonstration zones would stick to green development, industrial upgrading, opening-up and cooperation, and intensified reform.

Support would be provided in planning guidance, reform experimentation and arrangement of special projects to push forward the construction and development of demonstration zones in a comprehensive manner.
