Jiangsu University (JSU) was founded by combining the former Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Zhenjiang Medical College and Zhenjiang Teachers' College with the approval of the Ministry of Education of China in August, 2001. It has now successfully developed to be a comprehensive teaching and research oriented university with strength of engineering.

JSU has 24 schools offering 88 undergraduate programs in 10 academic fields. The university has 13 post-doctoral research stations, 9 primary (or first-level) disciplines for doctoral degrees, 42 doctoral programs, 35 primary academic principles offering master programs and 170 master programs, 26 fields for ME, 2 national key academic disciplines, and 1 national key academic discipline under cultivation. Four disciplines have been ranked as global top 1% in ESI, such as Engineering, Materials Science, Clinical Medicine and Chemistry. According to the Evaluations of China's Universities in 2015 by China Academy of Management Science, JSU is ranked 55.

The university covers an area of 203 hectares with teaching and experimental equipment worth 760 million CNY. The library has a floor area of 62,500 m2 with a collection of 2.7 million books and 1.2 million e-books. The university has one national engineering and technology research center, one national experiment teaching demonstration center, two national pilot zones for talents training pattern innovation. Jiangsu University Press and Jiangsu University Hospital (the A-level hospital) are two major affiliations to the University.

The university has 5,763 staff members (including those of Affiliated Hospital). 2,475 are faculty members, including 450 professors. 54% of them have got Ph.D degrees and over 24% have experience of overseas study. The current total enrollment of full-time students amounts to over 33,000, including 10,000 postgraduates, 842 international students from 74 countries. Jingjiang College of Jiangsu University has an enrollment of about 10,000 full-time students. The university's undergraduate teaching was graded excellent by the Ministry of Education. It is among the first batch of 61 Pilot Universities for Excellent Engineers Training in China and among 8 Pilot Universities for National Educational System Reform in Jiangsu Province. In recent years, Jiangsu University has won 5 national awards for teaching achievements. 3 Ph. D dissertations were ranked among Top 100 Ph. D Dissertations in China, and another 5 were nominated for the Top 100. Jiangsu University participated in the Challenge Cup national ex-curricular academic, scientific and technological competition and won Excellent Cup in consecutive four years. The employment rate of the university's graduates has been over 95%. In recent five years, the university's total amount of research financial grants has reached over 2.5 billion CNY, 790 million CNY of which is granted by the governments. Jiangsu University has won 8 national awards for sci-tech achievements, 2 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Awards for Sci-tech Innovation.

The university has established long-term cooperative relationship with 87 universities and educational or research institutions in countries such as America, England, Germany, Australia Austria and Japan and etc.. The Confucius Institute co-built by Jiangsu University and Graz University (Austria) is operating smoothly, and the co-built Chinese-German Language and Culture Center has opened. The cooperative postgraduate program in Engineering Thermophysics between Jiangsu University and Magdeburg University (Germany) and the cooperative undergraduate program in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics between Jiangsu University and Acadia University (USA) have gone smoothly.
