Upon the founding of the People's Republic of China the northeastern region of China was chosen as the location of the country's first industrial base because of its geographical advantage of lying close to the Soviet Union, a powerful socialist country in Europe and Asia from 1922 to 1991.

Subsequently, a large number of Soviet experts were sent to Northeast China to help China build an ideal and socialist industrial base, and the construction of the factory of China's First Automotive Works (FAW) was one of the typical paradigms.

In Changchun, the capital city of Jilin province, FAW's old site starts from Yingchun Road and extends to Dongfeng Avenue, then goes to No 1 and No 2 Kunlun roads that sandwich the Communist Youth League Garden, and ends at No 113 Building on Jincheng Avenue.

At that time, influenced by the Soviet Union, the south side of the FAW block was designed in Russian style, while the north side still retains the Chinese tradition.

The architecture in the block is dominated by low-rise buildings of the 1950s with unique style that is characterized by rinsing red brick walls, wooden trusses, sloping roofs, upturned eaves, bracket sets, protruding rafters, and tiled roofs. [Photo/Changchun Institute of Urban Planning &Design]

The colors of the buildings are coordinated with red bricks, green eaves and gray tiles. The buildings are usually laid out in the form of a residential courtyard.
