The majority of venues for the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022 will be approved in March 2021, the organizing committee of the event said.

The underlying philosophy of the Hangzhou Asian Games is "greenness, smartness, thriftiness, and politeness".

According to the Hangzhou Sports Bureau, the majority of the 50 competition venues needed for the games are existing facilities, including the Dragon Sports Center and college arenas in three university clusters in city suburbs. Approximately 20 training venues will be set up in local sports academies and regular schools to save on costs.

"There's no need to worry about too much government spending or inconvenience caused by large scale construction – the city has carefully analyzed risks and benefits and has made a cautious decision," Xu Tonghao, deputy director of the sports bureau said.

Construction on new venues is expected to be 40 percent complete by the end of this year, said organizers at the meeting.

All venues using pre-existing facilities will be constructed as quickly and cost-effectively as possible, said an official from the organizing committee.

Fifty-six venues for different sporting events at the games have already been decided on.

Hangzhou is the third city in China to host the event, which is held every four years, after Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, in 2010.
