Hohhot-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway will come into operation by the end of this year, according a statement by China Railway Hohhot Group.

The railway will start from Zhangjiakou, a central city of Hebei province, and run to Hohhot, the capital city of Inner Mongolia autonomous region, with a total length of 286.8 kilometers and a designed speed of 250 kilometers per hour.

It will connect with the Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway, and become the first railway that links Hohhot and Beijing. The travel time between two cities is expected to be shortened to about three hours with the launch of the railway.

Construction of the railway began in April 2014 and it is expected to enter its trial run soon. A section between Ulaanqab and Hohhot has already been fully operational since 2017.

Inner Mongolia has witnessed a boom in railway construction in recent years. It welcomed its first high-speed railway in January 2015, and launched the first trans-regional railway service in December 2018.
