A photo exhibition backed by National Geographic intended to increase awareness of endangered species opened in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, on June 28.

The National Geographic Photo Ark is a multiyear project led by photographer Joel Sartore in an effort to document species before they disappear.

The 1,000-square-meter exhibition highlights more than 400 of Sartore's most compelling wildlife images and provides visitors with the unique opportunity to come face to face with animals through virtual reality technology.

Since the project was initiated in 2005, Sartore has visited more than 200 zoos, aquariums and animal rescue centers around the world and filmed 9,000 species of wild animals. Hangzhou is the first Chinese city to host the exhibition.

The exhibition will last until Sept 8.
