A forum on the security and development of shipbuilding companies was recently held in Putuo district, Zhoushan, in Zhejiang province – attracting many company representatives, experts and academic specalists in the shipbuilding industry to share their insights into the topic.

The forum was co-hosted by the government of the district, the Zhejiang Ship Industry Association and the Zhoushan Safety Production Association.

Leng Jianxing, deputy director of the Ocean Academy of Zhejiang University, said he believed that the competitive edge enjoyed by the shipbuilding sector in the new era rested on innovation in marine equipment.

Leng suggested that intelligent information technologies be used in the sector, especially technologies about new energy marine equipment.

Cai Yuliang, deputy director of the scientific innovation center at the China Classification Society, concurred that intelligent applications were a key to the development of future shipbuilding.

Cai explained that intelligent ships used sensors and internet technologies to detect information about the ocean environment, logistics and ports, and realize intelligent operations, management and maintenance.

Putuo district now houses many leading shipbuilding companies in China, and has seven 150,000-ton-capacity docks and four 300,000-ton-capacity docks.

Its ship repair output witnessed a year-on-year increase of 10.4 percent last year, and its foreign vessel repair volumes accounted for a quarter of the nation's total.
