Putuo district in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, launched a large renovation project on one of its arterial roads on May 19 to improve its urban transportation.

The project, worth 190 million yuan ($27.5 million), will include the renovation of the 3.7-kilometer Donghai West Road that connects the district with Dinghai district and the New Town area.

According to local authorities, the median strip between the motor way and the bicycle lane will be replaced by a guardrail to give drivers more space. Pavement will also be leveled to make it more comfortable for pedestrians to walk on.

In addition, the green landscape, lighting facilities, traffic signs and sewage conduits will be improved.

The project will be completed by December, but the main road will be open to traffic by the end of September.
