Shantou University (STU), founded in 1981, is a comprehensive university jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong provincial people's government and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. The University campus covers a total area of 1.26 square kilometers with a floor space of 435,200 square meters.  

The University consists of 8 colleges and schools, namely the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Sciences, the College of Engineering, the Medical College, the Law School, the Business School, the Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, and the Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication. It enrolls qualified students from all over the country (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan).

Currently, the University has one national key discipline, offers Cheung Kong Scholar Professorships, provides five postdoctoral programs (one doctoral program for first-level disciplines and 25 doctoral programs for second-level disciplines), 10 master’s programs for first-level disciplines and 84 master’s programs for second-level disciplines, as well as seven professional master's degree programs. It also has seven national distinctive programs, one national key laboratory, six provincial key laboratories, and two national pilot sites for innovative talents training. STU has 1,540 staff members, over 10,056 students and has nurtured over 90,000 graduates.

Under the auspices of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, STU has become one of the few universities in mainland China that awards full scholarships to overseas exchange students. So far, the university has established close academic ties with nearly 20 universities in countries such as the US, the UK, France, Japan, Russia, Australia and Germany, and has launched exchange programs for undergraduate and graduate students.
