Rivers in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, can now be automatically monitored all day thanks to a special water monitoring device developed by a local technology company.

The device, developed by the Zhoushan Juyang Technology Co, was put into use on May 10 at a wetland park in Putuo district.

Designed in a house shape, the device will take water sample with a pump inside, and analyze the sample immediately before sending the results to a PC or mobile phone on the land for relevant authorities to keep getting updates of the water quality.

Notably, the device has two solar panels on its top for power generation.

"The device can realize timely and continuous water monitoring, without the need for manual sampling, sample transport and lab analysis," said Fang Dongping, general manager of the company.

Fang added that the device will generate monitoring data every half an hour.

Zhoushan has seen large improvement in its river quality in recent years, yet previously, the daily water monitoring relied mainly on regular human inspections, which proved to be inefficient.

Many dead fishes were found in the river by a volunteer team from an elementary school in Putuo district in March.

Next, the company plans to apply the device in more rivers in the city.
