Ocean College, Zhejiang University
The Ocean College of Zhejiang University in Zhoushan is the first special campus established by Zhejiang University outside Hangzhou. In 2003 it was called the Marine Science and Engineering Research Center of Zhejiang University, and has undergone various stages of development over the past 15 years. In 2015, the Ocean College was founded.
The college has three departments: marine science, ocean engineering, and the marine information science (finance).
It has nine research institutes in marine geology and resources, marine chemistry and environment, marine biology and medicine, physical ocean and remote sensing, marine engineering and technology, port coast and offshore engineering, marine structures and ship engineering, marine sensing and networks, and marine electronics and intelligence.
The Ocean Research Institute of Zhejiang University and the Zhoushan Branch of Advanced Technology Research Institute of Zhejiang University are also based at the campus.
The Zhoushan Campus (Phase I) covers a total construction area of 200,000 square meters. By the end of October 2018, there were 1,599 full-time students (including 827 undergraduates, 703 graduate students), and 110 full-time teachers (including 34 professors/researchers, 47 associate professors/deputy researchers, and 29 lecturers).
Among the teachers, there are two candidates for the National Thousand Talents Program and one member of the Changjiang Scholars Award Program.
Ocean college enrolled 71 international postgraduates in 2017, including 32 full-time master’s students and 31 full-time PhD students from more than 21 countries and regions. It has the most international students among all the engineering and information colleges of Zhejiang University. In response to the One Belt and One Road concept initiated by the central government, the college puts emphasis on attracting students from B&R countries such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Egypt and Indonesia.
Ocean College encourages foreign experts to come to China for long-term academic communication and cooperation. Foreign experts or candidates must meet one of the following basic requirements:
1. Being an associate professor or above in a renowned foreign university or research institute
2. Professional and technical personnel or management talents who hold senior positions in internationally renowned enterprises or institutions
3. Entrepreneurial talents with independent intellectual property rights or mastering core technologies
4. Other high-level foreign experts and young talents urgently needed by industries that encourage foreign experts to come to China for long-term cooperation.
