This year marks the 10th anniversary of direct sailing between Taicang, Jiangsu province and Taiwan, according to the commemorative activity held in the mainland city on Jan 15.

In December 2008, Taicang port, along with three other mainland ports, was allowed to arrange ships directly sailing between the two places immediately after the "three exchanges" was launched between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.

The "three exchanges" refer to exchange of mail, trade, air and shipping services; the opening of postal, aviation and navigational services, and commercial interflow.

During the past 10 years, the amount of cargos transported to Taiwan at the mainland port saw an average of two digit increase each year.

The number of scheduled ships to Taiwan in a week has been increased to three from the original one and the annual transport volume of containers has soared from 12,000 to 84,000.

The three other ports are Shanghai port, Tianjin port and Fuzhou port.
