Ereenhot is a county-level border city in Xiliin Gol, North China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region. With a border line of 72.3 kilometers, it borders Mongolia and is only 4.5 km from Zamen Ude in Mongolia.

About 690 km from Beijing, Ereenhot (Railway and Highway) Port is the nearest border port to the capital. It is also China’s largest land port and the only railway port into Mongolia.

The port was approved as a first-level railway port in 1965 and the highway port was opened in 1992. The port was initially designed to handle 4.5 million tons of cargo annually, with the railway port handling 3.5 million tons and the highway port 1 million tons.

The port serves as an ideal transfer station for cargo from Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asian countries to Mongolia and Russia, and is the only port that connects Mongolia to Tianjin Port, a major coastal port. In 2013, China-Europe trains through the port from Zhengzhou in Henan province and Chengdu in Sichuan province were launched.

From January to November 2018, cargo transported through the port totaled 15.3 million tons, an increase of 13.6 percent year-on-year. About 2.2 million people entered or left through the port, an increase of 8.1 percent year-on-year.
