Established in 1981, the Shenzhen Museum now has three venues with a total construction area of more than 50,000 square meters, namely the Museum of History and Folk Culture, the Museum of Ancient Art, and the Ye Ting Guerrilla Command Memorial Museum. It is a large comprehensive museum for the collection, protection, research, exhibition and public education of ancient relics. It is ranked among China's First Grade National Museums and national classic red tourism spots.

The collections of the Shenzhen Museum come from allocations from relevant agencies of the state, province and city, as well as acquisitions and donations from society. There are more than 40,000 cultural relics, including more than 5,400 precious cultural relics of national level three or above. The museum has more than 6,000 materials related to the history of reform and opening up, placing it among the top museums in China. It houses advanced provincial collections, such as bronzeware from the Shang Dynasty (c.16th century–11th century BC) and Zhou Dynasty (c. 11th century-256 BC), ceramics, modern paintings and calligraphy, and wild animal specimens.

With the goal of "introducing large-scale exhibitions, seeking high-quality exhibits, and attaching importance to quality", the Shenzhen Museum has held more than 900 special exhibitions, with an average of more than 20 per year. It has exhibited national treasures such as a square vessel with four rams, jade clothes sewn with gold wire, Emperor Qin's Terracotta Warriors, and the Sword of Gou Jian (a king of the Yue Kingdom), as well as cultural relics from various countries and regions, such as the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Italy, India, and Egypt.

Adhering to the idea of "going global", the museum arranged for its ancient art works, unearthed cultural relics, folk relics, and modern cultural relics to be exhibited in more than 20 renowned museums at home and abroad, including museums in Hong Kong, Macao, Beijing, and more. In addition, exhibitions are frequently organized for grassroots communities, parks, schools, troops, and enterprises.
