Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine

Established in 1954, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) has experienced its historical periods as Jiangsu Provincial Continuation School of Chinese Medicine, Jiangsu Provincial School of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing College of Chinese Medicine, Jiangsu New Medical College and Nanjing College of Chinese Medicine. As one of the earliest established universities of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China, it is a university selected in National “Double First-Class” University Construction, a university involved in key construction projects of Jiangsu Province, and co-developed by the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the People’s Republic of China. Over the last 63 years, NJUCM has trained the first wave of teachers, created the first edition of textbooks and teaching syllabus, produced the earliest academicians in TCM field, made fundamental contribution the establishment and promotion of higher education mode for P. R. China, therefore has been renowned as “the cradle of China’s higher education in Chinese Medicine”.

Located in the historical ancient city Nanjing, NJUCM has Xianlin and Hanzhongmen campuses. Currently, it has nearly 20,000 enrolled students of various kinds and sets schools including School of Basic Medicine, School of the First Clinical Medicine, School of the Second Clinical Medicine, School of the Third Clinical Medicine (Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine), School of Medicine and Life Sciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Health Economics and Management, School of Nursing, School of Foreign Languages, School of International Education, School of Information Technology, School of Psychology, International Jingfang Institute, School of Integrative Medicine, Graduate School, School of Continued Education, School of Humanities and Political Education and etc., offering 30 undergraduate programs and involving 6 branches of academic disciplines including medicine, management, science, engineering, economics and humanities, forming the educational pattern that centers on Chinese medicine while combining Chinese and Western medicines and developing multiple disciplines as its support.

NJUCM now has 1 national key disciplines (first rank), 2 national key disciplines (second rank), 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines, 2 construction projects and 2 selected projects of preponderant disciplines of colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province, 10 key disciplines at Jiangsu Provincial level, 33 key disciplines of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the P.R.C. NJUCM has two disciplines, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology has been included in the top 1% of Global ESI ranking. NJUCM is among the first batch of universities eligible of awarding master and doctoral degrees in China. Now it boasts 3 doctoral programs (first rank) in Chinese Medicine, Chinese Medicine Pharmacology, and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine. Its degree programs cover all the disciplines (second rank) in Chinese Medicine, Chinese Medicine Pharmacology, and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine.

NJUCM insists on the students as the center of education, striving to push forward the training mode reform for elite students in Chinese Medicine programs such as the nine-year bachelor to doctor degree program, the 5+3 overall training program for clinical physician. NJUCM has been elected among the pilot universities to conduct the national reform project of Physician Education and Training Program of Excellence and currently it has 3 pilot projects. It has 5 national level characteristic programs, 2 national level pilot projects for overall major reform, 6 national level courses for excellent resources sharing, 2 national level teaching groups, 1 national level talents cultivation mode innovation experimental zone, 3 national level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national level university students off-campus practical education base, 33 national level planning textbooks (as editor-in-chief), 4 national level teaching achievement. It has 3 directly affiliated hospitals, the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine), The Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (The Second Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine), Bayi Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (The PLA Bayi Hospital), and 29 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 4 Clinical Medicine Schools of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, 3 affiliated pharmaceutical companies, and over 100 teaching and internship bases of various kinds. 

Boasting strong research capabilities, NJUCM now has 1 National Engineering Research Center for the National Development and Reform Commission, 1 key laboratory for the Ministry of Education, 1 Engineering Research Center for the Ministry of Education, 2 key laboratories at Jiangsu Provincial level, 6 Jiangsu Provincial level of Engineering Research Center (Engineering Laboratory), 7 Jiangsu Provincial level university key laboratories (including 1 cultivation project for National Key Laboratory), 1 Jiangsu Provincial key laboratory in Marine Science, 1 key research base of philosophy and social science at Jiangsu Provincial level, 4 key research offices for State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 national level demonstration center of technology transfer. NJUCM is among the Key National Ancient Literature Protection Units first approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Education, and serves as a branch of the Chinese Medicine Literature Retrieval Center. Over the past few years, NJUCM has made remarkable achievements in scientific research, receiving 2 awards for Second Class Prizes of The National Scientific and Technological Advance Award, ranking into the national top 100 universities in the year 2016 and 2017 for the total number of projects approved by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC), making it the top Chinese Medicine university in terms of the overall grants approved by NNSFC. The Academic Papers of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, a core Chinese academic journal published by NJUCM, has been elected as the resource journal of key database of CSCD, the key journal in Chinese and the top 100 excellent research journals in Chinese universities.

NJUCM adheres to preciseness in education and creates strong academic atmosphere on campus. NJUCM has cultivated years of talents in Chinese medicine and serves as the national continuing education base for Chinese medicine faculties. It  now has 6 Chinese medicine grand masters, 4 nationally renowned Chinese medicine doctors, 2 academicians of dual employments, 2 Changjiang Distinguished Professors, 6 recipients of National Science Fund for Distinguished Youth Scholars, 3 members of Disciplinary Evaluation Group of State Council, 1 leading scientist of national 973 program, 7 electees of national Tens of Millions Project, 54 recipients of  Special government allowances of the State Council, 2 experts distinguished for outstanding contribution to the nation, 2 nationally renowned teachers, 1 national model teacher, 6 nationally excellent teachers, 3 renowned teachers for Chinese medicine higher education institutions, 1 recipient for National Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholar, 10 Specially-Appointed Professors in Jiangsu Province, 2 recipients of Bethune Medal, 1 recipient for Science and Technology Innovation Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, forming a leading faculty team with high caliber among the national Chinese medicine universities and colleges.

The university is WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine designated by the World Health Organization, and is International Acupuncture Training Center approved by the Ministry of Health, and is one of the first advanced Chinese Medicine institutions authorized by the Ministry of Education to enroll international students as well as students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. In 1993, NJUCM pioneered the practice of cooperating with RMIT University, Australia to facilitate the Bachelor program of Chinese Medicine offered by a western university.

NJUCM makes every effort to promote the understanding of Chinese Medicine in foreign countries with special focus in developing overseas Confucius Institute and Chinese Medicine Center. A leading Chinese Medicine Confucius Institute was established by NJUCM in collaboration with RMIT University, Australia on June 20, 2010. H.E Mr. Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony and delivered keynote speech. NJUCM currently has extensive communication and contact with over 90 countries and regions worldwide, and has established partnership with higher education institutions, government agencies and academic groups in over 30 countries and regions, which demonstrated its international influence. NJUCM has successfully established 8 overseas Chinese Medicine Center in Oceanian, European and American regions. Especially, the 3 Chinese Medicine Centers of Sino-Australia, Sino-Switzerland and Sino-France have been authorized by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of P. R. China as national-level overseas Chinese medicine centers.

In 2015, NJUCM successfully passed through the quality assessment for undergraduate education with excellent scores, and has been fully granted accreditation by the Ministry of Education in Bachelor programs of Chinese Medicine and Chinese Medicine Pharmacology. In the 2016 and 2017 Chinese University Ranking, NJUCM is placed the top one in the ranking of Chinese Medicine Universities. Facing the future, NJUCM will continue to deepen reform in its educational and administrative systems, sparing no effort in implementing the strategy of strengthening the university by high caliber and developing the university by high quality. By maintain its characteristic features and strengthening connotation construction, NJUCM strives to build itself as a leading Chinese medicine university with international reputation among the high-level universities with unique features in China.
