Beijing University of Chinese Medicine

Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) is a prestigious university in China under the direct leadership of the Chinese Ministry of Education and jointly established by the National Health and Family Planning Commission (the former Ministry of Public Health), State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM) and the municipal government of Beijing. Its leading subjects are  traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Chinese materia medica. It is the exclusive top university of traditional Chinese medicine listed under the Project 985 and Project 211.

Founded in 1956, the university, originally known as Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is one of the earliest established institutions of higher learning of traditional Chinese medicine approved by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.

In terms of university management, BUCM adheres to the university motto “ Qin Qiu Bo Cai , Hou De Ji Sheng ” (Study Diligently, Make Use of the Strengths of All Others; Value Virtue and Benefit the Society by Practicing Medicine) and the management philosophy “constant pursuit of excellence”. It advocates learning, inheritance, and innovation and aims to cultivate students with morality and humanity. With distinctive characteristics and great strengths, the university has become a teaching base for the cultivation of high-level innovative TCM professionals, a model base for the reform of TCM education, a research base for the innovation in TCM knowledge and technology, a health care base for the prevention and management of critical conditions and complex and miscellaneous cases, a humanity base for the dissemination of Chinese excellent traditional culture, and an international exchange base for the introduction of TCM to the world. It has become a world-renowned TCM university performing functions of teaching, research and medical care services, making great contributions to the development of health care and civilization of the mankind.

There are 27,833 registered students at the university. 9,473 are full-time students. Among them 5,985 are undergraduate students, 2,827 are master’s degree students and 661 are PhD students. Postgraduate students account for 36.8% and international students 10.3% of all the students.

BUCM consists of the following schools: School of Preclinical Medicine, School of Chinese Materia Medica, School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, School of Management, School of Nursing, School of Humanities, Graduate School, International School, School of Continuing Education, School of Distance Education, and School of Chinese Culture Studies. In addition it has three clinical schools,they are the First School of Clinical Chinese Medicine (Dong Zhi Men Hospital), the Second School of Clinical Chinese Medicine (Dong Fang Hospital), the Third School of Clinical Chinese Medicine (the Third Affiliated Hospital), . Currently, the university offers 11 bachelor’s degree programs across a wide range of subjects including Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, TCM Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, Public Health Management, Business Management, Information Management and Information System, Nursing, English (Medical Science), and Law (Medicine and Health).

BUCM has three post-doc research centers of traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese materia medica, and integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine.

By now, it has trained over 20,000 TCM professionals from 90 countries and regions, and formed collaborations with 108 prestigious universities and research institutions from 30 countries and regions.

BUCM sponsors national level academic journals like Journal of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine , Journal of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (Clinical Medicine) , TCM Education , and Journal of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences , all of which are important arenas for academic exchange in TCM area.

Along with the development of higher education and traditional Chinese medicine, the university is speeding up development, adapting itself to the needs of national economic and social development, sticking to innovation in education, and striving to establish a high-level internationally renowned research-oriented university with distinctive features.
